iPhone Recovery Mode

I have an iPhone 5s which decided to stop working and I only got an iTunes icon with a plug in on my screen.  I restored to original, tried to backup from iTunes, said I needed password, never recall checking box to encrypt.  I tried backup from earlier 4s phone which I still have.  That worked but I need my recent backup, bad. I am afraid that is not going to be possible.  I called Apple again and was told to sit and enter passwords all day, essentially.  I have only a few passwords I have ever used and they do not work.  Do I give up?  Thank you for any advice.

Ann

How to Recover an iPhone Backup, Encrypted or not

Question:

I have encrypted my iPhone backup before, but I lost the password of iTunes backup. So now I can’t restore iPhone from backup. I got prompt of “the password you entered to unlock iPhone backup was incorrect. Please try again”. How do I take the password off so I can restore iPhone?

Answer:

Now, we may need to know what is iTunes backup at first.

Once you sync an iDevice that’s been synced with another computer, iTunes would ask you whether you wish to erase and sync/backup. Press backup, and iTunes will enable you to backup the complete iDevice onto its system. You could have essentially synced an iDevice without erasing everything, and have absolutely also backed it up.

In the backup section, you also have an option to encrypt your backup. If you select it, a box will pop up ask you to enter a password. This password is used to encrypt your backup files. It is necessary when you want to restore your iPhone from the backup, so that this will also prevent your backup files being used illegally by others who don’t know your password.

iTunes will save your backup file on computer. According to different OS, it specifies different location of iTunes backup.

Since the password is necessary when restoring iPhone from backup, so how can we reset the password when iTunes prompts you that your password is incorrect? Except to try possible passwords you used before, there is another relatively reliable method to recover the password. You need an iPhone backup unlocker. It is designed to unlock password for iTunes backup.

How to Restore iPhone 5 from iTunes Backup Files?

I was told by a MobileMe rep that I should restore my iPhone from a Backup.  When I connect the iPhone to iTunes (not set to automatically back up when connected!) and press Restore, I get the following message:

“Do you want to back up the settings for the iPhone before restoring the software? [2 options]: “Back Up   or  Don’t Backup”

No matter which of the two I click on, I get to the next message:

“Are you sure you want to restore the iPhone to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased, and the newest version of the iPhone software will be installed.”

Actually I do NOT want to restore to factory settings, but to yesterday’s backup. Where and how to I get to this option?

I once did a restore to factory settings and it was quite a lot of work to get my iPhone back to the way it used to be (among others, a need to rearrange all apps into pages and folders, add friends’ phone number etc.)     Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah, firstly, we should make the concept of iPhone restore clear:

* Restore iPhone from backup: You have a backup created by iTunes, and depends on different computer OS, it will give different location for the backup, details are as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Windows 8/7/Vista
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Mac
~Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

Then in the future, when you lost data on iPhone and want to restore the data to your iPhone, it is called “Restore iPhone from backup”.

Note: The backup in the above location are all SQLITE_DB files, you cannot view them directly until freeing them.

* Restore iPhone to factory settings: This is also called a full restore. When you do this, your iPhone will be set as a brand new one. And as the name tells you, you are turning the iPhone to the state when it was in factory.  All your previous app settings, personal data such as contacts, photos, text messages, notes, safari bookmarks and so on are all erased by the factory reset.
